Biography of Heinrich Theodor Boll, recipient of the 1972 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Heinrich Theodor Boll, recipient of the 1972 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Cologne, Germany. His father was a cabinet maker. Following graduation from high school, he took an apprenticeship as a bookseller. He spent the latter part of World War II in an American prisoner-of-war camp in France. Later he became a member of the "Gruppe 47."

Boll began writing as a child. His first book, DER ZUG WAR PUNKTLICH (THE TRAIN WAS ON TIME), was published when he was 30. Many of his writings reflect his experiences during World War II.

Heinrich Boll died near Bonn, West Germany in 1985.
